Here are the key things to consider when choosing rug sizes for various types of rooms:

    Living Room

    • Standard sizes are 8’x10′ and 9’x12′ for average living rooms
    • Rug should be at least 6-8″ wider than the sofa on both sides
Run the rug the length of the sofa
    • Leave 18-36″ of walkway space between large furniture pieces
    • Rug should be large enough to anchor the seating area, with front legs of furniture on the rug

    Dining Room

    • Rug should be large enough to accommodate all chairs when pulled out, extending 24″ beyond the table on all sides
    • Common sizes are 8’x10′ for tables seating 6-8 and 9’x12′ for longer tables
    • Round rugs for round tables, rectangular rugs for rectangular tables

    Bedroom

    • Rug should extend 18-24″ beyond the sides and foot of the bed
    • 8’x10′ works well for queen beds, 9’x12′ for king beds
    • Smaller 5’x8′ may work for full or twin beds
    • Leave 10-24″ of bare floor between rug and walls
    • Rug can be placed under the bed and nightstands or just under the lower 2/3 of the bed

    Kitchen

    • Runner rugs (2’x6′ or 2.5’x8′) work well in front of sinks or stoves
    • 3’x5′ or 4’x6′ for larger kitchens
    • Accent rugs (2’x3′) can add color in front of the sink or stove
    • In an eat-in kitchen, rug should accommodate table and chairs like a dining room

In general, opt for a rug size that anchors and defines the space without overwhelming the room.

The rug should be proportional to the size of the room and furniture.

When in doubt, going slightly larger is usually better than too small.
